Here is what the “Lead Actor in a Comedy Series” category would look like if I was in charge of the Emmys (unfortunately, you can only nominate six people).
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
- Fred Savage (Stewart Sanderson, The Grinder)
– Rob Delaney (Rob, Catastrophe)
– Chris Geere (Jimmy Shive-Overly, You’re the Worst)
– Chris Messina (Danny Castellano, The Mindy Project)
– Rob Lowe (Dean Sanderson, The Grinder)
– Jake Johnson (Nick Miller, New Girl)
Runner-Up: Jeffrey Tambor (Maura Pfefferman, Transparent)
Fred Savage is a great director but, as he proved once again with The Grinder, a pretty brilliant actor, too. His panicked line delivery whenever Stewart tried to defend logic, and got shut down as illogical, could’ve been Debbie Downer but instead was endearing. In the more reactive role to Rob Lowe’s dramatic brother, Dean, Savage always had the right expression for Lowe’s antics. It’s a shame the show got canceled but I’m excited to see what career move Savage makes next.
And let the debates begin! Do you agree with my choices? Disagree? Voice your thoughts in the comments below and organize your own nominee list using the official Emmy ballot.
Also be sure to check back July 14th when the official nominees get announced.
(P.S. No worries if your choices are long shots (certainly many of mine are). but it’s nice to pretend they have a chance anyway.)
